Kilifi County has made history by electing Catherine Kenga as the first woman Speaker of the County Assembly—a move widely celebrated as a significant milestone for women empowerment in the region.

Kenga, who previously served as the acting County Secretary and as the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Roads, officially assumed the role following the impeachment of former Speaker Teddy Mwambire last month.

In a commanding win, Kenga garnered 48 out of 51 votes, decisively defeating four other contenders for the position. Her victory triggered jubilant celebrations both inside and outside the assembly chambers, with MCAs and members of the public hailing the outcome as a triumph for women's leadership.

Notably, Kenga becomes not only Kilifi's first female Speaker but also the first woman to hold such a position in the wider Coastal region—paving the way for more women to rise to leadership roles.

Governor Gideon Mung’aro and his full cabinet of County Executive Committee Members were present to witness the swearing-in of their former colleague.

Among the other contestants, Tendai Lewa, Shadrack Mwachiru Mazera, and former Ganda Ward MCA Reuben Katana failed to secure any votes, while Faith Zawadi received only six.

Majority Leader Ibrahim Abdi Matumbo said Kenga was chosen not just because she is a woman, but because she was eminently qualified. He cited her past experience and competence in county leadership roles.

“We’ve worked with her both as CEC Roads and County Secretary, and we believe she’s the right person for the job,” said Matumbo. “There were also concerns over recent allegations of assault against a female MCA in these chambers. By electing a woman, we’re sending a clear message that women should be respected and supported.”

He added that they expect Kenga to be a strong voice for women’s rights and empowerment within the assembly.

Kilifi resident Elizabeth Macdonald echoed this sentiment, saying Kenga’s election marks a turning point for women in leadership.

“We are very happy to see a woman rise to the position of Speaker. It shows the great strides women are making, and I pray she leads with wisdom and becomes an inspiration to many others,” she said.

In her acceptance speech, Kenga expressed deep gratitude and readiness for the role, noting her vast experience from serving in both county and national government roles.

“Happiness is an understatement. Women are going places, and I thank the male MCAs who found it fit to elect me—not just because I’m a woman, but because they believe in women’s leadership,” she said.

Her election follows last month’s impeachment of former Speaker Teddy Mwambire, who was removed from office over allegations of gross misconduct
