A high level of competition was witnessed during this year’s Makueni County Music Festivals, which concluded over the weekend at Mwaani Girls’ High School.

The event, which attracted a record number of participants, saw over 100 performance items qualify for the upcoming regional competitions. Leading schools such as Makueni Boys, Makueni Girls, Mwaani Girls, and Mwaani Boys each qualified with more than ten items, showcasing their dominance in the performing arts.

Speaking during the closing ceremony, the Kenya Music Festivals Makueni County Secretary, Mr. Pius Mutinda, lauded the impressive turnout and the quality of performances exhibited throughout the festival.

“Compared to last year, the numbers are significantly higher. We are very happy that teachers are now fully embracing performing arts, which aligns perfectly with the Competency-Based Curriculum,” said Mutinda.

He noted that with the introduction of Music and Dance as examinable subjects in the new curriculum starting next year, the level of school participation in music festivals is expected to rise even further.

However, Mutinda expressed concern over the low participation of boys in the festivals, urging boys’ and mixed secondary schools to motivate more male students to get involved in music and performing arts.

“These festivals have, for a long time, been dominated by girls. I therefore encourage boy schools and mixed institutions to take the festivals seriously and ensure boys participate in large numbers,” he emphasized.

Mutinda expressed confidence in the county’s performance at the upcoming regional level, saying he expects the selected items to compete favorably and earn a spot at the national festivals.

The regional music festivals are scheduled to take place in Chuka from June 29 to July 7, 2025.
