Judicial Service Commission (JSC) Commissioner Caroline Nzilani has called for strengthened child protection and the promotion of a reading culture among learners, underscoring the role of discipline and mentorship in shaping future leaders.
Speaking on Friday at Unoa Comprehensive School during the delivery of President William Ruto’s Ksh5 million pledge, Nzilani emphasized that while alternative dispute resolution (ADR) mechanisms remain vital in the justice system, certain cases—particularly those involving the violation of children’s rights—must be handled through the courts.
Nzilani, who serves as Vice Chair of the school’s Board of Management, noted that the judiciary employs a multi-door approach to justice, allowing for different mechanisms of resolving disputes. However, she cautioned that serious offenses, especially those affecting children, demand formal judicial intervention.
She urged parents and teachers to take an active role in nurturing and guiding children, warning that lack of discipline at an early stage could lead to serious consequences later in life.
“Children are future leaders and must be raised with care, love, and strong moral values. Any form of abuse against them will be dealt with firmly through the courts,” she said.
In a move aimed at inspiring learners, Nzilani donated five motivational books authored and personally signed by Chief Justice Martha Koome. She directed that the books be placed in the school library to encourage a reading culture among students.
Nzilani highlighted Chief Justice Koome’s journey from a humble background to leading the judiciary as a source of inspiration for learners, urging them to remain focused and pursue their ambitions relentlessly.
The donation, she said, is intended to instill a culture of reading and personal development, with students encouraged to share the books to maximize their impact.
The event brought together several leaders who oversaw the fulfillment of the President’s pledge, aimed at supporting infrastructure development at the institution.
