Jamhuri Day celebrations in Machakos County on Thursday drew a moderate turnout across various locations, with Kalama taking centre stage as the host of this yearโ€™s festivities. Residents turned up to commemorate the national holiday while reflecting on persistent challenges facing the region.

Kalama, long affected by recurring drought, continues to grapple with rising cases of drug abuse among young people, increasing incidents of livestock theft, and chronically low education levels. Despite these difficulties, the community successfully held its first Jamhuri Day celebrationโ€”an achievement local leaders hailed as a sign of resilience and unity.

Speaking at the event at Muumandu Primary School, High Court Judge Alexander Muteti expressed concern over the low levels of education in the area. He urged stakeholders to prioritise access to quality learning, noting that empowering children through education remains essential to tackling the regionโ€™s social and economic burdens.

Deputy County Commissioner Ntombura Mionki echoed those sentiments, raising alarm over the growing cases of livestock theft. She cautioned perpetrators, insisting that the government would not tolerate criminal activity that destabilises communities. Mionki affirmed that security agencies were under firm instructions to arrest and prosecute offenders.

Chief Douglas Kitavi of Lumbwa Location, the official host of the celebrations, called on residents to safeguard peace and cohesion. He encouraged them to work hand-in-hand with government officers in addressing local challenges, emphasising that sustainable development can only thrive in a peaceful environment.

Youth representatives also took to the podium, urging leaders to provide better opportunities for young people. They appealed for programmes that would help steer the youth away from destructive behaviours and support them in pursuing education and productive livelihoods.

The celebrations ended with renewed commitments from both leaders and residents to confront Kalamaโ€™s long-standing challenges while nurturing hope and unity for the future.
