Residents of Mgomoni village in Kilifi South constituency were all smiles after Senate Speaker Amason Kingi commissioned two solar-powered boreholes to ease the perennial water crisis in the area.
The fresh water project is set to directly benefit more than 7,000 people, including learners in local schools, patients at dispensaries, small-scale farmers, and traders. Mgomoni, a semi-arid village long plagued by water scarcity, is also home to Kingi, who said he felt a personal responsibility to uplift the community.
“When I came to settle here some years ago, I dug a borehole in my compound but later realized that many of my neighbours struggled to access clean water,” Kingi said during the official handover of the boreholes. “That is why, together with my friends — including the Chinese Embassy in Kenya — we decided to provide this life-saving resource.”
Each borehole is expected to serve between 2,500 to 3,500 residents. The solar-powered installations are designed to operate sustainably, harnessing clean energy to ensure consistent water supply throughout the year.
Kingi, who was accompanied by Kilifi Senator Stewart Madzayo, also highlighted other development initiatives he has supported in the area through his foundation, Friends of Amason Kingi. Among them is the installation of street lights stretching three kilometers from Ndonya Police Station to Marembo village.
“We will continue to implement programs that have a direct impact on wananchi,” he noted. “I’m also pleased to announce that I have successfully lobbied the national government to tarmac the six-kilometer Ndonya–Mtepeni road. Construction is set to begin next week and will help open up Ndonya village and the wider Mtepeni ward.”
Senator Madzayo applauded the gesture, urging Kilifi residents to rally behind Kingi so that he can leverage his position in government to attract more development.
“Let me appreciate what my brother Kingi has done for us today,” Madzayo said. “As one of the top-ranking government officials in the country, we must support him to bring more national projects to Kilifi, including resolving the long-standing squatter issue.”
The borehole project has been widely praised as a model of community-centered leadership and effective public-private partnership.
