The County Government of Machakos, in partnership with the M-Pesa Foundation, has commissioned a modern 22-bed maternity wing at Kangundo Level 4 Hospital in a major boost to maternal and child healthcare services in the county.

The newly upgraded facility, which is equipped with a dedicated maternity theatre, is expected to significantly improve maternal healthcare by reducing delays in emergency interventions and minimizing maternal and neonatal complications.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti described the project as a major milestone in enhancing healthcare services and ensuring safe deliveries for mothers across the region.

She said the facility would strengthen emergency response services, improve newborn care, and provide quality maternal health services to women throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period.

“We have fully stocked this facility with essential maternal and newborn medicines, ensuring that our mothers receive safe, dignified, and quality care throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period,” Governor Wavinya said.

The governor noted that the county administration remains committed to improving healthcare infrastructure and expanding access to quality medical services for residents.

Healthcare workers at the facility have already reported positive outcomes from the upgraded maternity wing. According to Kangundo Level 4 Hospital midwife Everlyn Mbindyo, the facility has so far served approximately 2,400 mothers seeking antenatal and postnatal services.

She said the modern infrastructure and improved services have received overwhelming praise from local mothers, many of whom have described the transformation as life-changing.

Governor Wavinya also commended the M-Pesa Foundation for its continued investment in both healthcare and education sectors within the county.

She revealed that the foundation has invested Sh138.5 million in various healthcare projects across Machakos County, helping improve medical facilities and service delivery.

“In the health sector, M-Pesa Foundation has injected Sh138.5 million in various healthcare facilities across the county. In the education sector, the Foundation has invested Sh625 million, providing transformative learning environments alongside full scholarships for students,” she said.

Speaking during the event, M-Pesa Foundation Coast Region Business Lead James Mutisya said the partnership reflects Safaricom’s commitment to transforming communities through sustainable development initiatives.

“Our presence here today goes beyond the buildings and equipment that we are handing over. It is about transforming lives and creating hope for the residents of Kangundo and the county at large,” Mutisya said.

The commissioning of the maternity wing is expected to ease pressure on existing healthcare facilities and improve access to specialized maternal and newborn care services for thousands of families in Kangundo and neighboring areas.

The project underscores the growing role of public-private partnerships in strengthening healthcare systems and improving the quality of life for communities across Machakos County.
