A new survey by Mizani Africa has placed Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka firmly ahead of his political peers, positioning him as the country’s preferred opposition flag-bearer ahead of the 2027 General Election.
According to the aggregate results, Kalonzo commands a significant 39.6 percent support—nearly double that of his closest challenger—underscoring his national appeal, long-standing political experience, and reputation as a skilled negotiator capable of uniting competing interests within the opposition. Analysts say the results reflect growing public confidence in his ability to rally diverse political blocs and provide stable leadership.
Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i follows at a distant second with 22.5 percent, buoyed largely by strong regional backing, while former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua ranks third at 13.1 percent. Gachagua’s numbers indicate robust support within his traditional base but limited reach across the rest of the country.
Other potential contenders—former Chief Justice David Maraga, Martha Karua, Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa—register marginal support, pointing to minimal national consolidation around their candidacies.
The report suggests that, should the opposition seek a united front in 2027, Kalonzo Musyoka currently stands as the most broadly accepted figure to steer that coalition.
