Machakos County Governor Wavinya Ndeti has called on young people to remain vigilant and avoid being exploited for political gains, while emphasizing the importance of professionalism in sports.
Speaking during the official draw for the Super 9 of the third edition of the Governor Wavinya Cup, the Governor cautioned that some politicians might attempt to use young people to create chaos or engage in illegal activities.
“Register as voters and vote; do not allow politicians to use you to create chaos in the community or involve you in wrongdoing,” Governor Wavinya urged, encouraging the youth to actively exercise their democratic rights.
The Governor also addressed the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), team managers, and players, stressing that football should be taken seriously as a source of income and career opportunities. “Playing games is not a joke. We need to take football seriously. Some people earn a living through sport. We want professionalism in football, and it is important that we uphold law and discipline,” she said.
Highlighting the tournament’s impact on youth development in the county, Governor Wavinya pointed out that several young talents have progressed to professional levels.
“Currently, six young women have been enlisted in the Harambee Starlets national U-17 team, another has secured a position in the prestigious Police Bullets FC, and Felix Mwendwa, an alumnus of the Governor Wavinya Cup, earned an opportunity to showcase his skills in Spain,” she revealed.
The Governor also reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to youth empowerment through initiatives such as the Machakos Youth Service. She encouraged footballers to form structured groups to benefit from upcoming empowerment funds provided by the county government.
The third edition of the Governor Wavinya Cup has attracted 650 football teams and 14,300 players from across Machakos County. The grand finale is scheduled for 13 December 2025, with winners in both the men’s and women’s categories set to receive one million Kenyan shillings each.
Governor Wavinya concluded by emphasizing that meaningful transformation in Machakos County can only be achieved through the empowerment and active participation of young people.
