National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has assured residents of Chwele–Kabuchai that security agencies have heightened surveillance ahead of Thursday’s by-election, warning that authorities will act firmly against any form of violence or intimidation.

Addressing a campaign rally for Ford–Kenya candidate Vincent Maunda on Tuesday, Wetang’ula said the country is closely watching the mini-poll and urged voters to uphold peace as they head to the ballot.

“Residents of Sirisia and Kabuchai are peace-loving people. We will vote calmly and exercise our democratic right responsibly,” he said.

The Speaker took issue with recent remarks attributed to area MP Majimbo Kalasinga, who allegedly vowed to “go chest-to-chest” with the Ford–Kenya team during the election. Mr Wetang’ula termed the utterances reckless and uncalled for.

“I was shocked by his statements. Let me remind him that we are like bees — if you rattle our honey nest, the outcome may not be pleasant,” he cautioned.

Wetang’ula expressed confidence that Maunda will clinch the seat, saying he is best positioned to deliver meaningful development to the ward once elected.
