In a significant boost to the Wiper Democratic Movement–Kenya, three aspirants have withdrawn from the Mumbuni North Ward by-election race in favour of Wiper’s Antony Kyalo Kisoi.
The trio — David Kiarie of the Jubilee Party, Peter Maingi (Independent), and David Wambua (DJ) — announced their withdrawal shortly after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) cleared candidates for the November 27 by-election. They cited the need to unite behind a progressive, people-centered candidate as their motivation.
Speaking after stepping down, Jubilee’s David Kiarie said his decision was guided by a desire to support youthful leadership that prioritizes unity and development.
“It’s time for the youth to lead with unity and purpose. I believe Mr. Kisoi represents the kind of leadership Mumbuni North needs — focused, people-driven, and development-oriented,” said Kiarie.
The IEBC Machakos Constituency Office officially cleared Mr. Kisoi to vie in the by-election, a move that has galvanized the Wiper Party’s support base across the county.
While flagging off Mr. Kisoi’s delegation to the IEBC offices, Machakos Governor H.E. Wavinya Ndeti urged residents to rally behind him, describing him as a humble and dedicated servant of the people.
“I urge the people of Mumbuni North Ward to come out in large numbers and support Mr. Kisoi. He is the only candidate who truly stands for the interests of the people. Let’s vote for him as a show of continued support for our Party Leader, Dr. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka,” Governor Wavinya said.
The Governor further emphasized the need for Wiper supporters to remain united, noting that strengthening the party’s dominance in the region would bolster Dr. Musyoka’s position among opposition leaders as a viable presidential flag bearer ahead of the 2027 General Election.
After receiving his clearance, Mr. Kisoi expressed gratitude to his supporters and to the candidates who stepped down in his favour.
“I promise not to disappoint. I will dedicate myself to ensuring that Mumbuni North receives the development it deserves after years without proper representation. I also urge my fellow aspirants to embrace peace and conduct issue-based campaigns,” said Kisoi.
The IEBC Returning Officer, Ms. Alice Kimani, reminded all candidates to adhere to the electoral code of conduct and maintain peace throughout the campaign period.
The Mumbuni North Ward seat fell vacant following the passing of the late Hon. Gideon Kavuu.
