Machakos County Assembly is bracing for heightened drama as Majority Leader Nicholas Nzioka re-introduces an impeachment motion against Speaker Ann Kiusya, a move that has already split the Assembly.
The motion, initially signed by 33 members on March 19, 2025, is back on the table following a court ruling that lifted stay orders earlier secured by the Speaker to halt the process.
Speaking shortly after filing the motion, Machakos Central MCA and Majority Leader Nzioka confirmed that the impeachment had now been listed in the House Business Committee’s order paper, which will decide if it will be tabled on the Assembly floor.
“The Court has given us a leeway to either proceed or drop the impeachment. As the mover of the motion, I intend to proceed because we have every reason to do so,” said Nzioka.
He emphasized that the Speaker should respect the law and step aside to allow the Assembly to deliberate on the matter fairly. “You cannot sit in a committee that is investigating you. Natural justice demands you step aside. If the Assembly clears you, you stay. If not, you go home,” he said.
Nzioka further alleged misuse of public funds by Speaker Kiusya, citing a controversial trip to London in which she allegedly traveled with non-Assembly members, spending Ksh1.6 million of Assembly funds.
He noted that the Auditor General has since raised concerns over the expenditure, recommending that Kiusya be surcharged and subjected to disciplinary action.
“One of the reasons I am happy with this motion is that the Auditor General has concurred with us. The best disciplinary action, in my view, is for us as MCAs to send her home,” added the Majority Leader.
As tension builds, Wiper MCAs allied to the Majority Leader have vowed to push the motion forward, while Speaker Kiusya’s allies are expected to fight back fiercely.
Acting Speaker Stephen Nzue Mwanthi of Ekalakala Ward is expected to preside over the Assembly tomorrow as the standoff escalates.
The County Assembly is expected to witness fireworks when the impeachment motion is re-tabled, in what could mark a defining moment for the embattled Speaker.
