Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. has dismissed claims by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse that the Makueni County Government had refused to provide land for the construction of a modern stadium promised by President William Ruto.
Speaking at Mwaani in the Wote/Nziu area of Makueni County, Mutula said the claims were unfounded, insisting that the county government had already allocated land for the proposed facility and secured the necessary documentation.
The governor said the county had set aside 20 acres for the construction of the modern stadium and obtained a title deed to facilitate the project.
Mutula recalled that when President Ruto visited Makueni, county leaders asked him to intervene in the stalled stadium project that had been launched in 2017 but failed to progress.
“Wakati Mheshimiwa Rais alikuwa Makueni, tulimuomba kwamba stadium ambayo walifungua 2017 ilikwama. Akasema hiyo stadium haiwezi kuisha kwa sababu imejengwa kwa shimo,” Mutula said.
He said the President subsequently asked the county government to provide land for a new modern stadium, a request he said Makueni honoured by providing the required parcel and its title deed.
“Akatuuliza Serikali ya Makueni ipatiane eka 15 ajenge modern stadium, na tukampa title deed. Na ndiyo hii nimeshika,” the governor said while displaying the document.
Mutula accused those claiming that the county had declined to provide land for the project of misleading residents, insisting that Makueni had already fulfilled its responsibility.
“Sasa yule jamaa ambaye alilopokwa juzi akisema eti tunakataa na kiwanja hiyo ni uongo,” he said.
The governor said residents should instead focus on ensuring that the promised facility is delivered, adding that the stadium should provide modern sporting facilities for young people across the county.
He said the facility should be better equipped than the Ithookwe Stadium in neighbouring Kitui County, providing space for football, athletics and other sporting activities.
“We must ensure that the people of Makueni get the stadium that was promised to them, and it should be better than Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui,” Mutula said.
He added that the facility should accommodate athletes and footballers while providing adequate space for other recreational activities.
During the same meeting, Mutula called on Makueni residents to support former Vice President Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka in his bid for the presidency in the 2027 General Election.
