Principals of the United Alternative Government have signed a personal unity pledge and coalition agreement aimed at keeping the opposition alliance united as it prepares to select a joint presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election.
In a joint statement issued after a meeting at Windsor Hotel in Kiambu County on Monday, the leaders said they had taken a “decisive step” towards consolidating their unity and presenting Kenyans with what they described as a credible, democratic and transformative alternative government.
The principals, operating under the theme “Country Above Self: United Alternative Government Principals Seal a Covenant of Unity,” said the agreement would require each leader to remain committed to the coalition before and after the selection of its presidential flagbearer.
“After extensive and candid consultations, we have unanimously agreed to execute a Personal Unity Pledge and a Coalition Unity Agreement, through which each Principal commits individually and collectively to remain united, participate in a credible process of selecting our presidential candidate, and thereafter fully support and campaign for the candidate chosen to carry our common mandate into the 2027 General Election,” the statement said.
The leaders said the agreement marked an important transition in the coalition’s journey, noting that Kenyans were increasingly demanding political leaders to put national interests ahead of personal ambitions and partisan differences.
They said millions of Kenyans were looking beyond individual leaders and political parties and were questioning whether those seeking to offer alternative leadership had the courage to set aside personal ambitions and historical differences for the greater good of the country.
“Our answer today is unequivocal: Kenya comes first,” the principals declared.
The unity pact is expected to be a major step towards addressing divisions that have often weakened opposition formations ahead of general elections, particularly during the process of settling on a joint presidential candidate.
With the 2027 General Election approaching, the coalition now faces the crucial task of developing a credible mechanism for selecting its presidential flagbearer while maintaining the unity pledged by its principals.
The agreement signals a renewed effort by the United Alternative Government to present a united front and avoid fragmentation as the political battle for the country’s leadership intensifies.
