Tension is rising in Kitui County, particularly in Kitui Central, after two bodies of murder victims were discovered in separate incidents, heightening fear among residents.
The first body was found early in the morning near Kalundu Market, bearing severe injuries to the head and hands—an indication of a brutal attack. The second body was discovered dumped at a slaughterhouse within Kitui Central under circumstances that remain unclear.
Confirming the incidents, Kitui Central Sub-County Police Commander Peter Karanja said investigations have already been launched.
“Police received information about a dead body, and we have commenced investigations. We will provide updates as we gather more information that will help us get to the bottom of the matter,” said Karanja.
He urged residents to cooperate with security agencies by sharing any information that could assist in addressing the rising cases of crime in the area.
Meanwhile, Kitui County Assembly Security Committee Chairperson Charles Kyalo Muinde expressed concern over the killing of a middle-aged woman whose body was found near Kalundu Market.
Muinde linked the increasing cases of murder to domestic conflicts, calling on couples to seek peaceful ways of resolving disputes instead of resorting to violence.
“It is deeply unfortunate to lose a middle-aged woman in such a manner. Many of these killings are rooted in domestic disagreements. We urge couples facing conflicts to consider separation rather than allowing tensions to escalate into fatal outcomes,” he said.
Residents also voiced their fears, noting that such incidents are not new in the area. They recalled previous cases where bodies were found in locations such as slaughterhouses and near rivers, with little clarity on what transpired.
“This is not the first time. A woman’s body was once found at the slaughterhouse, and people remained silent. There was also a case where two bodies were discovered near the river under unclear circumstances. We are appealing to the government and police to take action because we fear for our safety,” said a local resident.
The incidents have raised serious concerns over security in Kitui County, with both leaders and residents calling for urgent measures to curb the growing wave of killings and ensure justice for the victims.
