Kenya Youth Inter-County Sports Association (KYISA) Games witnessed a historic moment as Makueni County clinched the prestigious men’s football title for the first time.

The Makueni men’s team delivered an outstanding performance throughout the tournament, showcasing resilience and tactical discipline to overcome strong competition from Narok, Laikipia, Mandera, Tana River, and Busia counties on their path to victory.

The football triumph capped an exceptional outing for Makueni, which further asserted its dominance by securing three additional trophies in men’s 5×5 basketball, women’s 5×5 basketball, and women’s 3×3 basketball. The multi-discipline success highlighted the county’s growing strength in sports development.

Speaking after the victories, Sports Executive Committee Member Sebastian Kyoni attributed the success to deliberate investment in grassroots sports structures. He noted that the county has prioritized comprehensive talent identification, structured training, and adequate funding to nurture athletes.

Kyoni emphasized that most of the players were scouted through local initiatives such as the Ligi Mashinani and MKJ Supa Cup, which have become key pipelines for identifying and developing talent at the community level.

Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr lauded the teams for their exemplary performance, describing them as true ambassadors of the county. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to increasing budgetary allocation to sports in order to sustain and expand the gains achieved.

“We celebrate you, our ambassadors and heroes of Makueni County. Discipline and resilience are the reasons you have brought home the majority of trophies,” the governor said in a congratulatory message.

The victories mark a significant milestone for Makueni, positioning the county as an emerging powerhouse in Kenya’s inter-county sports landscape.
