Former Machakos Town MP Victor Munyaka has strongly criticized the rising levels of corruption within the current administration, arguing that despite the government collecting substantial revenue, the funds are not being used effectively to benefit ordinary citizens.
Speaking during an interview on a local radio station, Munyaka raised concerns over Kenya’s growing public debt, comparing successive administrations. He noted that during the tenure of former President Mwai Kibaki, the national debt rose to approximately KSh 1.6 trillion over ten years. Under former President Uhuru Kenyatta, he said the debt increased to about KSh 8.6 trillion within a similar period. However, Munyaka expressed alarm that under the current leadership of President William Ruto, the debt has reportedly surged to KSh 13 trillion in just three years, even before the completion of his term.
Munyaka accused President Ruto of misusing power since assuming office, raising serious concerns about governance, accountability, and the management of public resources. He further explained his decision to part ways with Ruto and the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), claiming that the president had misled Kenyans, including himself and religious leaders, through unfulfilled promises.
In his remarks, Munyaka also criticized statements attributed to President Ruto regarding handling youth protests, particularly remarks suggesting that young demonstrators should be shot in the legs. He expressed disappointment, saying such sentiments were inconsistent with how previous administrations handled public demonstrations, where, according to him, protests did not result in such levels of force.
He added that these differences in leadership approach contributed to his decision to distance himself from the current administration, which he accused of pursuing misguided policies and damaging the country’s economy.
At the same time, Munyaka urged Kenyans to actively participate in the democratic process by registering as voters in large numbers. He emphasized that civic engagement is key to ensuring that leaders are held accountable and that citizens have the power to elect leaders who represent their interests.
Additionally, he indicated that the united opposition is likely to rally behind Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka. Munyaka described Kalonzo as a calm and experienced leader, as well as a peacemaker capable of fostering unity and steering the country toward a more stable and inclusive future.
