Leaders in Makueni County have intensified praise for President William Ruto’s development agenda, citing ongoing infrastructure, housing and social projects as evidence of accelerated progress in the region.

Speaking at Unoa Comprehensive School on Friday during the delivery of a KSh5 million presidential pledge for the construction of a perimeter wall, Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse outlined a series of flagship initiatives he said have reshaped the county’s development trajectory.

Mutuse said the government’s affordable housing programme in Wote, comprising 750 units valued at over KSh1.7 billion, is not only addressing housing needs but also creating jobs for more than 100 workers daily. He noted that wages paid weekly are directly supporting families and stimulating the local economy.

The MP further highlighted the revival of the long-stalled “Pelican” housing project, where 274 units—abandoned since the 1990s—are now nearing completion. He contrasted the progress with previous administrations, arguing that the current government has moved swiftly to unlock projects that had remained dormant for decades.

In the education sector, Mutuse pointed to ongoing construction of student hostels in technical training institutions and at Wote KMTC, with a combined capacity of 580 units at a cost of KSh250 million. The facilities, he said, will provide safe accommodation, particularly for female students.

Water access has also improved following the solarisation of boreholes in areas such as Mwaani and Kamunyolo, a move aimed at reducing operational costs and ensuring consistent supply. Meanwhile, market infrastructure is being expanded, with modern markets under construction in Kilala and Kathonzweni at a cost of KSh74 million each. A new multi-storey market in Wote will include child-friendly facilities such as a mother’s room.

Road connectivity remains a key focus, with the Emali–Wote–Ukia road project underway. Mutuse said the first 20-kilometre phase has already been awarded at a cost of KSh1.2 billion, adding that previously stalled sections like the Tawa–Itangini road have now been completed.

He used the platform to urge residents to support the President’s re-election bid in 2027, arguing that continued development hinges on political goodwill.

Also addressing the gathering, Andrew Mulwa, head of the National AIDS and STI Control Programme (NASCOP), called on Ukambani residents to shift from a “wait-and-see” mindset and instead take advantage of available opportunities. He commended the government for expanding road networks, including the Kyambalasi–Utangwa, Kaumoni–Itangini and Wote–Kako–Ngoluni roads, which he said are enhancing regional connectivity.

Judicial Service Commission Vice Chair Caroline Nzilani, who also serves as vice chair of the school’s board, donated books to promote a reading culture among learners.

Special Economic Zones Authority Chair Fred Muteti pledged food support to the institution, donating 30 bags of rice and 20 bags of beans to improve student nutrition.

The event brought together national and local leaders, reinforcing the government’s push to showcase development gains as political momentum builds towards the next general election.
