The national government has issued a stern warning to contractors lagging behind schedule, cautioning that delays are undermining the implementation of key development programmes across the country.
Speaking during a multi-agency inspection tour of the Galana Kulalu Irrigation Scheme and associated infrastructure projects in Kilifi County, Government Delivery Unit (GDU) Head Olando Sitati reaffirmed the State’s commitment to fast-tracking all ongoing and stalled projects within the year.
Sitati noted that while progress at the Galana Kulalu Food Security and Electrification Project remains largely on track, minor setbacks have been experienced in the electrification component. He, however, assured that electricity connectivity to the area is expected by June.
The GDU head commended contractors for the steady progress made on key installations, highlighting that the Sh1.4 billion Galana–Kulalu bridge is 96 percent complete, while the Sh2.9 billion electrification project has reached 41 percent completion.
The inspection team also included Jackson Magondu, Director General of Economic Planning at the National Treasury; Coast Regional Commissioner Rhodah Onyancha; and Masini Ichwara.
Onyancha emphasized the economic significance of the electrification project, noting that access to reliable power will reduce operational costs for investors in the Galana Kulalu region, particularly by cutting reliance on fuel, thereby enhancing productivity and returns on investment.
The Galana Kulalu initiative remains a flagship government project aimed at boosting food security through large-scale irrigation while attracting agricultural investment in the coastal region.
