Kenya is in mourning following the tragic death of Emurua Dikirr Member of Parliament, Johana Kipyegon Ng’eno, who perished in a helicopter crash on Saturday evening in Mosop, Nandi County.
In an official communication to the House, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetang’ula, announced that the lawmaker lost his life alongside five other passengers in the crash that occurred at approximately 4:45 p.m. on February 28, 2026.
Describing the incident as untimely and tragic, Speaker Wetang’ula conveyed profound sorrow on behalf of Parliament and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.
The late Ng’eno was serving his third consecutive term in Parliament, having first been elected in 2013. Over the years, he built a reputation as a committed legislator and an articulate voice in the House.
At the time of his demise, he was the Chairperson of the Departmental Committee on Housing, Urban Planning and Public Works, and a member of the Liaison Committee. During the 12th Parliament, he served in the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee, contributing significantly to legislative oversight and reforms.
Under his stewardship, the Housing Committee played a pivotal role in the passage of the Affordable Housing Act, 2024 — a landmark law aimed at establishing a framework for the development and access to decent and affordable housing for Kenyans.
Born in 1972, Ng’eno began his academic journey at Mogondo Primary School before joining Maseno National School for his secondary education. He later pursued a Bachelor of Arts in International Law at Kyiv TSN University in Ukraine.
Upon returning to Kenya, he earned a Master of Arts in International Studies from the University of Nairobi, a Bachelor of Laws degree from Mount Kenya University, and a Postgraduate Diploma from the Kenya School of Law.
In September 2025, he achieved a lifelong ambition when he was admitted to the Bar as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya — a milestone that underscored his dedication to public service and the rule of law.
Speaker Wetang’ula announced the appointment of a parliamentary team led by Tinderet MP Hon. Julius Melly and assisted by Hon. Mugambi Rindikiri, alongside eight other Members, to liaise with Ng’eno’s family and coordinate support arrangements, including burial preparations.
Further details regarding memorial and funeral arrangements are expected to be communicated in due course.
As the nation reflects on his legacy, colleagues remember Johana Ng’eno as a devoted servant of the people whose contributions to housing policy and legislative work will leave a lasting mark on Kenya’s parliamentary history.
May his soul, and the souls of the other victims, rest in eternal peace.
