Machakos County has taken another major step in youth empowerment following the launch of the second cohort of the Machakos Youth Service (MYS) ATC Bootcamp, an initiative aimed at equipping young people with practical skills, discipline, and opportunities for socio-economic growth.

Governor Wavinya Ndeti officially launched the programme, noting that it builds on the success of the first intake and reflects the county’s commitment to investing in the youth as a foundation for sustainable development.

Speaking during the launch, the Governor described the programme as a transformative journey that goes beyond technical training to nurture character, discipline, leadership, and a spirit of community service.

“The positive outcomes from the first cohort inspired us to expand the programme to include more youth across all wards,” Governor Wavinya said. “Graduation will not be an end, but a launch into society as skilled, confident, and responsible citizens. I urge all participants to embrace this journey with discipline, commitment, and compassion. As a county government, we remain steadfast in investing in youth as a key pillar for securing our future.”

The second cohort comprises 1,640 youth drawn from all wards in the county. Machakos Town leads with 245 participants, followed by Mavoko (223), Kathiani (218), Mwala (198), Yatta (168), Kangundo (165), Matungulu (163), Masinga (116), Ndithini (76), and Kalama (68).

Governor Wavinya explained that the MYS programme is structured into three key phases. The first phase, the Formation Centre, focuses on instilling discipline, teamwork, leadership, and strong moral values. The second phase places participants in Vocational Training Centres, where they acquire hands-on, market-driven skills in fields such as Electrical and Electronics, Culinary Arts, Motor Vehicle Mechanics, Plumbing, Masonry, Welding, Cosmetology, Fashion and Design, Event Management, and DJing. The final phase emphasizes Community Service, enabling the youth to give back while creating measurable impact within their communities.

The Governor further urged participants to maintain high standards of discipline, respect, and good conduct throughout the programme, noting that responsible behaviour is critical to fully benefiting from the opportunities provided.

Beneficiaries from the first cohort testified to the programme’s impact. Kamene Mutiso described the initiative as life-changing, saying it equipped her with practical skills and tools to start her own small business. Stephen Mutiso echoed similar sentiments, crediting the programme for providing hands-on experience and opening doors to employment and entrepreneurship.

The Machakos Youth Service programme continues to position itself as a key driver of youth empowerment, skills development, and community transformation across the county.
