A multi-agency task force led by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has dismantled a major counterfeit alcohol operation in Machakos County, seizing illicit liquor and related materials valued at approximately Sh13 million.

The operation, conducted early this morning, targeted two of the county’s largest suspected counterfeit alcohol dealers in Kabaa in a carefully coordinated, simultaneous raid. Officers uncovered an extensive illegal enterprise operating from unlicensed premises.

Inside the raided stores, authorities recovered thousands of bottles of counterfeit spirits, fake Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) excise stamps, and large quantities of empty bottles branded with labels of popular alcoholic drinks. Investigators say the haul points to a well-organised repackaging and distribution network supplying counterfeit alcohol to the wider region.

Of particular concern to authorities was the discovery that one of the illicit storage facilities was located within a residential neighbourhood, exposing families and children to potentially lethal brews.

“This is not just an economic crime; it is a direct assault on public health and the social fabric of our communities,” said NACADA Chief Executive Officer Dr Anthony Omerikwa, who was present during the raid.

Dr Omerikwa disclosed that one of the suspects arrested in the operation is a repeat offender who had previously been charged with similar offences, underscoring the persistence and boldness of counterfeit alcohol syndicates.

In a firm warning to offenders, the NACADA boss announced that the premises where the illicit alcohol was recovered will be processed for forfeiture to the State, in line with presidential directives.

“We are sending a clear and unequivocal message that there will be no safe haven for individuals who profit from poisoning Kenyans,” Dr Omerikwa said.

The Kabaa raid marks the third major breakthrough in the region within just two days, following similar crackdowns in Joska, Machakos town, and parts of Makueni County, signalling an intensified national campaign against illicit alcohol and drug abuse.

The renewed enforcement drive follows a recent strong directive from President William Ruto, who has declared the fight against alcohol and substance abuse a national priority, ordering security agencies and regulatory bodies to act decisively against those behind the illegal trade.
