Team Kenya put on a commanding display at the ongoing East African Community Inter-Parliamentary Games (EAC-IPG) in Kampala, Uganda, recording impressive victories and podium finishes across multiple athletics events.
Kenyan lawmakers stormed to gold in the men’s 4x400m relay at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Namboole. The quartet—Hon. Vincent Musyoka, Hon. David Ochieng, Hon. Dan Wanyama and Hon. Bernard Kitur—clinched the top medal after clocking 50.8 seconds.
Hon. Musyoka, who co-chairs the Bunge Sports Club, continued his strong form by earning silver in the 100m race with a time of 12.6 seconds, finishing just behind Hon. Kitur, who secured gold in 11.8 seconds.
In the women’s sprints, Busia County MP Hon. Catherine Omanyo powered to victory in the 100m, taking gold in 16.7 seconds. Senator Esther Okenyuri finished fourth in 20.1 seconds. Team Kenya later bagged silver in the women’s 4x100m relay after posting a time of 1:26.0.
The middle-distance events also saw notable performances. In the women’s 1500m, Hon. Phylis Bartoo claimed silver with a time of 8:37.8, before finishing fourth in the 400m in 1:55.1. Senator Beth Syengo recorded 2:20.3 in the same race, which was won by Rwanda’s Mukabilisa Germaine.
In the men’s 400m, Hon. Mukunji Gitonga secured bronze after clocking 1:03.9, with Hon. Joshua Kandie placing fourth in 1:06.05. The men’s 1500m featured a tight contest, where Hon. Titus Lotee captured silver in 5:24.0, narrowly missing gold to Acan Julius, who finished in 5:23.5. Hon. John Kagucha claimed bronze in 5:54.1, followed by Hon. Joshua Kimilu (6:22.7), Hon. John Paul Mwirigi (7:35.0) and Baringo’s newly elected Senator Kipruto Chemitei (7:49.7).
The women’s relay team featured Hon. Irene Kasalu, Hon. Betty Maina, Hon. Esther Okenyuri and Hon. Florence Jematiah, who contributed to Kenya’s strong overall showing at the regional sports meet.
Team Kenya’s stellar performances underscore the lawmakers’ growing competitiveness at the annual tournament, further cementing the nation’s dominance in athletics within the region.
