The Mumbuni North Ward by-election concluded on Thursday night with Wiper Democratic Movement’s Antony Kisoi clinching victory, drawing praise from top political leaders and graceful concession messages from his competitors’ camp.
According to the official tally released by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Kisoi secured 3,849 votes, beating Chap Chap candidate Harrison Wambua, who garnered 2,766 votes. UDA candidate Misi Mutua followed with 809 votes. The closely fought contest underscored the ward’s vibrant political landscape and strong voter engagement.
Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka led the celebrations, hailing Kisoi’s win as a testament to the trust Mumbuni North residents have in Wiper’s leadership philosophy of servant-hood and development-focused governance. Kalonzo congratulated the newly elected MCA and urged him to “remain grounded in service, humility, and accountability as the people have entrusted you with an important responsibility.”
Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti echoed Kalonzo’s sentiments, describing the victory as “a reflection of the people’s confidence in Wiper’s track record in championing social welfare and grassroots development.” She called on Kisoi to deliver tangible results for residents, noting that the ward deserves strong, transparent leadership that listens and responds to community needs.
In a commendable show of statesmanship, leaders from the opposing camp conceded the outcome and congratulated the MCA-elect. Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, who vigorously campaigned for Chap Chap’s Harrison Wambua, acknowledged the will of the people, thanking supporters for their dedication. “We respect the democratic choice made by the residents of Mumbuni North,” he said, noting that the lively turnout reflected a healthy democratic process.
Machakos Town MP Caleb Mutiso, who also led the Chap Chap campaign machinery, urged unity going forward and wished Kisoi well as he takes office. He applauded the resilience of their supporters and encouraged the incoming MCA to prioritise inclusive leadership and development.
Other candidates also expressed heartfelt appreciation to their supporters, noting that although the results were not in their favour, the enthusiasm and massive turnout were a strong demonstration of community engagement.
With the election settled, residents now look to Kisoi’s leadership with renewed hope for improved services, stronger governance, and accelerated development. The peaceful contest and dignified acceptance of results highlighted the maturity of local democracy in Machakos County.
