The Mumbuni North Ward by-election began on Thursday with polling stations registering a mixed voter turnout, even as residents voiced optimism that the vote would usher in a leader capable of championing peace and driving meaningful development in the area.

Security remained heightened throughout the morning, with County Police Commander Monica Kimani issuing a stern warning to politicians against any form of disruption at polling centres. She cautioned that anyone found culpable would face the full force of the law.

Her remarks followed an incident earlier in the day where former MCA Paul Museku was roughed up by members of the public over allegations of voter bribery. Kimani, however, clarified that no concrete evidence of bribery had been established.

“If indeed Mr. Museku was assaulted, he should record a statement so the matter can be treated purely as a case of assault,” the police boss said.

The by-election—widely described as a two-horse race between Wiper’s Anthony Kisoi and Maendeleo Chap Chap’s Harrison Wambua—has drawn unusual political attention. The contest is seen as a litmus test of political muscle between Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Machakos Governor Dr. Alfred Mutua.

Dr. Mutua alleged that cases of voter bribery had been reported earlier in the day, adding that investigations by relevant authorities were already underway.

Beyond the frontrunners, the poll has attracted several notable contenders: Anthony Kisoi Mutua – Wiper, Misi Mutua – UDA, Harrison Wambua Mutuku – Maendeleo Chap Chap (MCC), Naomi Nduku Nzioki – UPA (United Progressive Alliance), Jones Benson Muema – People’s Trust Party (PTP), Stephen Mutua Muema – Independent, Carlweathers Mutisya – Independent and Richard Nzioki Joel – CCU

As voting continues, all eyes remain on Mumbuni North, with the outcome expected to shape political narratives within Machakos County and beyond.
