The race to the grand finale of the 3rd Edition of the Governor Wavinya Cup intensified over the weekend as ward champions clashed across various Sub-County pitches, each fighting for a coveted spot in the next stage of the tournament.
In Machakos Town Sub-County, fans were treated to a thrilling showdown as Scottlanders FC and Kitanga FC battled to a 2–2 draw in regular time. The deadlock set the stage for a tense penalty shootout, where Scottlanders held their nerve to claim a 4–3 victory.
In the women’s category, Jua Kali Queens showcased remarkable form, overpowering Katoloni Queens with a commanding 3–0 win.
Mavoko Sub-County produced its own drama, with Mavoko Youth edging out Makutano Allstars 3–2 on penalties after the two sides fought to a stalemate. Galacticos Queens also booked their place in the next round, securing a narrow 1–0 triumph over Makutano Queens.
Kalama Sub-County was no exception to the weekend’s intensity. Kitonyini FC advanced after defeating Muumandu FC 5–4 in a gripping penalty contest. In the women’s fixture, Talanta Queens sealed their progression with a spirited 3–2 win against Malaika Starlets.
With the competition tightening, all eyes now turn to next weekend as Matungulu, Kangundo and Kathiani Sub-Counties prepare to take to the pitch in search of their finest talent.
The battle for supremacy in this celebrated grassroots tournament is far from over, and the excitement continues to build.
