Tensions in the Mumbuni North by-election intensified on Sunday after Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse accused known WIPER operatives of attacking and vandalising their campaign sound vehicle near Mung’ala AIC.

According to the legislator, the attackers stoned the vehicle, damaged it, and made away with part of the public address system in what he termed a “criminal and electoral offence.”

Mutuse said the culprits, who were allegedly captured on video committing the act, have been positively identified and the matter has already been reported at Machakos Police Station.

Mutuse condemned the incidents, noting that violence and intimidation have no place in a democratic election. He involved Section 11 of the Election Offences Act, which criminalises the use of force or violence during campaigns, saying the actions of the attackers were a “clear indication of panic” within the WIPER camp.

“For elections to be free, fair and democratic, they must also be peaceful,” he said, urging authorities to act swiftly. “We call upon the police and the IEBC to take immediate action to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.”

The MP further claimed that his team has intelligence reports alleging plans by WIPER operatives to ferry hired youths into Mumbuni North on the eve of the vote, allegedly to intimidate women and discourage voter turnout. He dismissed the reported scheme as “tired, worn-out and unacceptable tactics” that must be dealt with firmly by security agencies.

Despite the disruption, Mutuse assured supporters that their campaign activities remain uninterrupted. He also appealed for calm, encouraging his supporters not to respond to provocation and to continue advocating for a peaceful, credible election.
