Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jnr has issued a strong rebuttal against what he terms a “malicious and fabricated narration” circulating on social media, distancing himself from claims suggesting he had dismissed Wiper leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka’s chances of defeating President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
In an official statement on Friday, Governor Mutula expressed outrage over a quote attributed to him, in which he allegedly said it would be “extremely difficult, almost impossible” for Kalonzo to unseat the President due to lack of resources and state machinery.
The Governor categorically dismissed the remarks as a “complete fabrication” crafted to fuel political division within Ukambani and weaken the opposition.
“This is a cheap, desperate tactic by political opponents and propagandists intent on sowing division ahead of 2027,” Mutula said, insisting he has never uttered such sentiments “or anything remotely similar.”
The Governor reaffirmed his unwavering loyalty to the Wiper Democratic Movement and declared full support for Kalonzo’s presidential ambition. He described the former Vice President as “the cleanest, most experienced, and strongest candidate to lead Kenya into a new era of integrity and prosperity.”
Mutula underscored that while he remains committed to collaborating with any administration to deliver development to the people of Makueni, such cooperation should not be mistaken for political alignment or betrayal of opposition ideals.
“Delivering development remains my top priority,” he said. “But that does not mean political endorsement or abandonment of our principles.”
The Governor further accused unnamed political rivals of twisting informal interactions and outdated statements to create tension in the region. He warned that these actors were “terrified of a united Ukambani and a united opposition” and were working overtime to manufacture discord.
Despite the smear campaign, Mutula expressed confidence that Makueni residents and Kenyans at large could see through the propaganda, reaffirming that the county “stands solidly behind Kalonzo Musyoka.”
“Together, we will deliver the change Kenya needs in 2027,” he concluded.
The Governor’s bold clarification comes as the political temperature rises within the opposition, with various factions striving to consolidate support ahead of the next presidential contest.
