Former Nairobi City Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Leadership and Governance by the American University of Peace and Governance, United States of America.

The recognition was bestowed upon him in acknowledgement of his outstanding contribution to sustainable humanitarian efforts, social work, and human capital development in Kenya.

In addition, Sonko received a Leadership Excellence Award, jointly conferred by the United Nations International Peace and Governance Council (UNIPGC) and the Jewel Howard Taylor Leadership Programme. The awards were presented at a grand ceremony held on Friday, September 26, 2025, at the historic House of Lords, British Parliament, United Kingdom.

The prestigious event attracted global dignitaries, philanthropists, and leaders united by a shared commitment to advancing peace, development, and governance worldwide.

Speaking after receiving the honour, Dr. Sonko attributed the milestone to divine providence. "See how God has elevated me on podiums of favour despite being out of office. I give God the glory for my work has been recognised," he said.

Sonko travelled to the UK on Thursday night after receiving an invitation from the Vice President of the Foreign Investment Network, Mr. Kate Sovedagari, to serve as both a speaker and award recipient at the high-profile event.

"This invitation is not only a great honour to me as Mike Sonko but also to the great Republic of Kenya at large," he told reporters ahead of the ceremony.

Also honoured at the event was Mr. Livinis Tsar, who echoed that the accolades were a call to deepen their collective commitment to peace and sustainable development.

On his part, Amb. Dt Jonathan Ojodah, the UNIPGC Global President and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, urged award recipients to live up to their roles as peace ambassadors and exemplary leaders on the global stage.

The United Nations International Peace and Governance Council is a diplomatic civil society organisation with global chapters, dedicated to promoting peace, advancing good governance, and championing poverty eradication.
