Rúben Amorim is yet to record consecutive victories since taking charge at Manchester United. The Portuguese tactician guided his side to a hard-fought 2-1 win over Chelsea at Old Trafford on Saturday, a game that saw both teams finish with ten men.
United went ahead early through Bruno Fernandes before Casemiro doubled the advantage. Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah pulled one back, but the Blues’ task had already been complicated by the early dismissal of goalkeeper Robert Sánchez. United, too, were reduced to ten men after Casemiro received a second yellow card before half-time.
The result leaves United on seven points after five matches, two wins, a draw, and two defeats, sitting just one point behind Chelsea, level with Manchester City, and three points off Arsenal.
Amorim who has been under the spotlight due to his 3-4-3 system has reminded the media that his philosophy is never the problem and not even the pope will make him change it.
“Not even the Pope can make me change the system. The problem isn’t the system, the problem is the results.”
Amorim reminded the reporters that United fans and the media demanded a manager with a clear identity and his Predecessor failed due to lack of identity
“I remember that all the media and fans were saying that a Manchester United manager must have a philosophy and an identity. Everyone was saying that when the previous coach said he couldn’t play the same way here as he did at his former club. Everyone was saying that he had been hired for his philosophy and his style of play, and that he wasn’t applying it here.”
For the Wingback merchant the issue is not about the philosophy, but more to do with luck :
“So, the system isn’t the problem. It’s the results. If you don’t win, people will point the finger at something. We will change our way of playing, but it will take time. I do things at my own pace. If I look at the matches, I think we’ve been unlucky. Luck that we can turn around by being more aggressive and more confident. Sometimes we play well, but it lacks conviction.
Amorim’s men now head to the Brentford Community Stadium this weekend, where a win would mark the first back-to-back Premier League victories of his tenure and potentially spark a change in momentum for their season.
