National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has emphasized the crucial role played by Kenyans living abroad in stabilizing the country’s economy through foreign exchange earnings, calling on the diaspora to continue investing in their homeland.
Speaking during a Women Empowerment Forum held at Nyamache Grounds in Kisii County and hosted by Woman Representative Dorice Donya, Wetang’ula urged Kenyans in the diaspora—particularly those in the United States—not to fall prey to misleading advice from leaders he described as visionless.
"Kenya is our home," said Wetang’ula. “The dollars remitted by our sons and daughters abroad help stabilize our economy through foreign exchange. Those telling you not to invest back home have lost direction.”
He praised the Abagusii diaspora community for their unwavering commitment to development, noting that most thriving businesses in the region—especially in agriculture—have been financed by diaspora remittances.
"Gusii region is richly blessed with fertile land and reliable rainfall, ideal for crops like bananas, avocados, and sugarcane. Much of this success is due to startup capital sent by our children working abroad," he added.
On tea farming, Wetang’ula assured residents that tea bonus payments in Kisii will be reviewed to reflect parity with other regions. "What we export mirrors Kenya's overall productivity. No region should be short-changed when it comes to earnings," he affirmed.
The Speaker commended the county’s leadership for ensuring the Abagusii community’s presence across key economic sectors such as transport, housing, and agriculture, stressing the importance of unity in nation-building.
"Together, we can build a great nation. Kenya must be built through unity, not tribalism or hate. Our leaders will continue traversing the country to support businesses, which are the backbone of our economy," he said.
Kisii Woman Representative Dorice Donya emphasized the need for structured group empowerment under the Kenya Kwanza government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.
"This initiative is unstoppable. We’re not handing out money to be shared aimlessly. It must empower people collectively," she said.
National Assembly Majority Whip Sylvanus Osoro affirmed that the country is on the right track. "We gain more as a community when we form strategic alliances with other political groupings," he remarked.
Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot echoed calls for political unity, warning against opportunistic tribal politics. "No single community can win an election alone. We must build coalitions that can offer real leadership," he said.
Migori Senator Eddy Oketch called out tribal leaders, urging Kenyans to reject divisive politics. "We must expose leaders whose agenda is to divide the country along tribal lines," he said.
Kwanza MP Ferdinand Wanyonyi lauded President William Ruto’s administration for delivering on its promises. "This country is ready for issue-based politics, not empty rhetoric. Kenya Kwanza is walking the talk," he noted.
The event was attended by several national and local leaders who reaffirmed their commitment to grassroots development and economic empowerment.
