Two journalists were violently assaulted and had their equipment stolen while covering a protest against land grabbing in Chokaa, Nairobi.
Victor Mogoa of K24 and Fred Mochama of KBC were attacked by hired goons while reporting on a demonstration by residents, who accused a private developer of illegally acquiring public land.
The residents took to the streets to demand justice, blaming the developer for causing poor drainage in the area, which has forced several families to abandon their homes.
During the chaos, the assailants made away with a Sony PXW-X70 camera, a tripod stand, and a smartphone belonging to the journalists. The two reporters sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital.
The alleged land grabber, identified as Lucy Gateri—believed to be an employee of Kenya Airways—has reportedly made life unbearable for the residents.
Locals claim she has colluded with elements within the local administration, frustrating efforts to seek justice or government intervention.
The affected residents are now calling on both the county and national governments to intervene and reclaim the grabbed land, restore proper drainage systems, and ensure the safety of journalists and whistleblowers exposing corruption and impunity.
“This is not just about land. It's about lives, safety, and our right to live in dignity,” said one resident.
