Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has urged residents living in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures as the county steps up preparations for anticipated adverse weather conditions.
Wavinya said residents living near riverbanks, low-lying areas and known flood corridors should take official weather advisories seriously and avoid crossing swollen rivers and other waterways.
She also warned parents and guardians to ensure children stay away from swollen rivers, streams and other potentially dangerous water bodies.
The governor spoke yesterday when she officially opened the Kenya Inter-Agency Rapid Assessment (KIRA) training at the Machakos County Disaster Operations Centre.
She said the training would strengthen the county’s capacity to collect accurate data, profile risks and coordinate rapid assessments during emergencies.
Wavinya said the timing of the training was critical, given weather forecasts highlighting the possibility of adverse conditions, adding that the county government had already deployed field teams to implement preventive measures.
“My administration is taking proactive measures to safeguard lives and livelihoods, with our field teams already implementing preventative actions on the ground,” she said.
The governor called on residents to promptly report emerging risks through established emergency response channels and exercise caution as weather conditions change.
She said the county government was working closely with national agencies, development partners and local communities to enhance preparedness and improve the speed and coordination of emergency response.
Wavinya thanked the Kenya Red Cross Society, Malteser International and other partners for supporting the county’s efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness and response.
She said the anticipated El Niño rains required collective responsibility from residents and authorities to minimise risks associated with flooding and protect lives and property across the county.
“The County Government of Machakos, in conjunction with other partners, remains on high alert, and we are taking the necessary measures to enhance preparedness, response and coordination during this period,” she said.
