Leaders from rival political camps came together in a rare show of unity and grief as the late Hon. Charles Were was laid to rest today at his rural home in Karabok, Oyugis, Homa Bay County.
The second-term Kasipul MP tragically lost his life on the night of Wednesday, April 30, 2025, after he was fatally shot by unknown gunmen along Ngong Road, moments after leaving Parliament Buildings.
Hundreds of mourners, including national leaders, clergy, friends, constituents, and family members, converged at Karabok Primary School grounds to pay their last respects to a man widely described as a selfless public servant and champion of education, development, and community empowerment.
Speaker after speaker praised Were’s dedication to uplifting the lives of his people, with calls for swift justice echoing throughout the solemn ceremony.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Masika Wetangula led a delegation of MPs in demanding that the government leaves no stone unturned in bringing those responsible to book.
ODM leader Raila Odinga, who was among the high-profile mourners, gave an emotional tribute, revealing chilling details that the late MP had expressed fear for his life.
“Ong’ondo knew something was wrong. During the Piny Luo Festival in January, he jumped into my car in panic, saying people were following him with bad intentions,” Raila said.
So far, eight individuals — including the MP’s bodyguard and driver — have been arrested and arraigned in court in connection with the gruesome killing.
