Youth in Machakos County have submitted a petition to the County Assembly, calling for the official recognition of Rex Masai and Erickson Mutisya as national heroes.
The two young men were fatally shot by police during last year’s anti-Finance Bill protests, which swept across the country.
Led by Free Kenya Movement national coordinator Felix Wambua, the group is advocating for the construction of a monument or the naming of streets in their honor.
They argue that such gestures would serve as a powerful reminder of the courage displayed by the youth in demanding justice and accountability.
“Rex Masai was the first protester to be killed during the demonstrations. Both he and Erickson were sons of Machakos County. Their sacrifice should never be forgotten,” said petitioner James Maingi, adding that a memorial would provide a space for reflection and inspire future generations to stand up for what is right.
The youth addressed the media in Machakos shortly after attending a county security briefing ahead of tomorrow’s planned protests.
They urged fellow members of Generation Z to show up in large numbers and continue the push for justice and reform.
