Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula has urged leaders across the political divide to promote peace and compete through ideologies rather than trading insults, warning that divisive politics were threatening national unity.

Speaking during a church service at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Kanduyi Constituency, Bungoma County, Wetang’ula emphasized the importance of respectful political engagement, especially at a time when the country needs unity to drive development.

“In the past, I have consistently said that we must uphold peace, because peace has no alternative in life. We may disagree, but we must do so respectfully. We may compete, but we must do so respectfully,” said the Speaker.

He called on the church to pray for the nation amid rising political tensions, noting that only peace can guarantee stability and progress.

“Peace has no alternative. It’s the only path that guarantees stability, unity, and progress for our society,” he added.

Wetang’ula was accompanied by Kanduyi MP John Makali, who urged the Church to continue playing a pivotal role in societal transformation, especially by instilling good morals in the youth.

The Speaker reiterated his commitment to ensuring Bungoma town attains city status, stating that he would do everything possible to fulfill the dream during his lifetime.

“I will ensure Bungoma is upgraded to a city in my lifetime,” he affirmed.

The Holy Trinity Cathedral Church later held a procession to pray for various sectors in Bungoma County, including the cereals board offices, the county assembly and executive offices, markets and business premises, and the entire nation, seeking divine intervention for peace and prosperity.

Wetang’ula was joined by Bungoma County First Lady Dr. Margaret Makelo, Kenyan Ambassador to the UAE Ken Nganga, Bungoma County Assembly Speaker Emmanuel Situma, and a host of Members of the County Assembly (MCAs).
