Charity Ngilu Pays Tribute To Michael Kijana Wamalwa, Hails His Democratic Legacy

Former Kitui Governor Charity Kaluki Ngilu has paid tribute to the late Vice President Michael Kijana Wamalwa, describing him as one of Kenya’s most gifted leaders and a key figure in the country’s struggle for democratic change.

Speaking during the commemoration of Wamalwa’s death, Ngilu remembered him not only as a colleague in the struggle for Kenya’s Second Liberation, but also as a close friend whose wit, conviction and commitment to democracy earned him respect across the political divide.

Ngilu said Wamalwa played a significant role in the political journey that culminated in the historic NARC victory in 2002, alongside other leaders who championed political reform and greater democratic freedoms.

She said Wamalwa understood that Kenya’s future depended on courage, coalition-building and respect for the people’s right to choose their leaders.

“Political leadership is not about the accumulation of power and riches, but its responsible use in service of the ordinary mwananchi,” Ngilu said, reflecting on one of the lessons she believes Wamalwa left behind.

Ngilu also praised Wamalwa’s eloquence and political principles, saying his commitment to public service continues to offer important lessons to current and emerging leaders.

As Kenya marks 23 years since Wamalwa’s death, Ngilu extended her thoughts to his family and the people of Trans Nzoia, saying his memory continues to be held with pride.

She challenged young leaders to draw inspiration from Wamalwa’s life, particularly his courage, integrity and vision, which she said would outlast the length of any political tenure.

“Fare thee well, Michael,” Ngilu concluded.
