Machakos County Woman Representative Joyce Kamene Kasimbi has launched a countywide initiative to provide water storage tanks to primary schools, with the aim of improving access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene in learning institutions.
Speaking at AIC Kithimani Primary School in Yatta Sub-county during the launch of the program, Kamene announced that the first phase will see the distribution of 120 water tanks to schools across the county. Under the initial rollout, three schools in each of Machakos' 40 wards will receive a tank, with the program set to expand until every primary school in the county is covered.
Kamene said access to clean water is essential for creating a safe and dignified learning environment, noting that the initiative will enable schools to harvest and store rainwater during the rainy season.
"Water is life. Every learner deserves access to clean and safe water for drinking, sanitation, and hygiene. This program will improve hygiene standards, reduce waterborne diseases, and create a more conducive learning environment for our children," she said.
The Woman Representative emphasized her commitment to ensuring that no school in Machakos is left behind, adding that the program will continue in phases until all learning institutions benefit.
AIC Kithimani Primary School Headteacher Judith Ngere welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that will ease the burden on pupils who have been forced to carry water to school for daily use.
She said the school had requested a water tank to address persistent water shortages and expressed gratitude that the request had been fulfilled.
"Previously, our pupils had to bring water from home every day for drinking and cleaning. This water tank will greatly improve water storage and make learning more comfortable for the children," she said.
At SA Mbingoni Secondary School, Principal Stephen Kamau said the institution has long struggled with water shortages, forcing the school to purchase water at a significant cost.
He noted that the newly acquired water tank will enable the school to harvest rainwater, reducing operational costs while ensuring a reliable supply of water for students and staff.
The first phase of the project targets 120 schools across the county, marking the beginning of a broader initiative that seeks to equip every primary school in Machakos with at least one water storage tank, enhancing water security and supporting better learning conditions.
