Football fever swept across Machakos County as thousands of residents joined millions of fans around the world to watch the FIFA World Cup 2026 final during free public watch parties organised by the County Government in all nine sub-counties.
The giant-screen screenings transformed public spaces into vibrant fan zones, with supporters turning out in large numbers to cheer on their favourite teams in a safe, family-friendly and alcohol-free environment. The initiative not only brought communities together but also underscored Governor Wavinya Ndeti's commitment to promoting sports as a tool for social cohesion and youth empowerment.
The watch parties formed part of the county's broader vision of establishing Machakos as a premier sporting destination through sustained investment in modern sports infrastructure, grassroots talent identification and athlete development.
Governor Wavinya's sports agenda is already bearing fruit. Through the annual Governor Wavinya Cup, several talented players have been identified and progressed to higher levels of competition, while county teams continue receiving support to participate in national and international tournaments.
Beyond the excitement on the pitch, the World Cup celebrations also provided an economic boost to local businesses. Boda boda and tuk-tuk operators, food vendors and small-scale traders reported increased business as fans gathered at the various viewing venues.
Residents lauded the initiative for creating an inclusive atmosphere where families, friends and football lovers of all ages could enjoy the world's biggest football spectacle together, describing it as a memorable celebration of sport, unity and community spirit.
