The hearing into the proposed removal of Machakos County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Finance, Economic Planning and Revenue Management, Catherine Mutanu Raphael, was on Monday halted after the County Assembly received official communication confirming that she had already been removed from office.
The Select Committee of the Machakos County Assembly had convened to hear submissions from Mutanu following her request for more time to prepare a response to the allegations levelled against her.
The committee had initially heard from the Finance CECM on Friday last week, when she sought additional time to organize her defence. Members granted the request and rescheduled the hearing to Monday, July 6.
However, as the proceedings got underway at the Assembly Chamber, the committee received a letter from the County Secretary notifying it that Mutanu had been removed from her position as the County Executive Committee Member for Finance, Economic Planning and Revenue Management.
The communication effectively brought the planned hearing to a halt, with the committee stating that it could no longer proceed as scheduled in light of the latest development.
Despite the change in circumstances, the committee resolved to continue executing its mandate. It announced that it would prepare and compile a report on the matter for tabling before the County Assembly.
The Assembly did not immediately disclose further details surrounding the removal of Mutanu from office or the contents of the County Secretary's letter.
