Principal Secretary for Aviation and Aerospace Development Teresia Mbaika has launched a scathing attack on Makueni Members of Parliament who voted against the Finance Bill, describing their actions as embarrassing and lacking proper understanding of the legislation.
Speaking during an empowerment programme organized by UDA leaders for Kiteta/Kisau Ward in Mukimwani, Mbaika singled out Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse as the only leader from Makueni County who demonstrated courage by supporting the Finance Bill.
She expressed disappointment that all the other MPs from the county rejected the Bill, accusing them of failing to read and understand the document before taking their positions.
“I honestly felt embarrassed by our leaders. Some had not even read the document. One was looking for reading glasses at the last minute, another could hardly explain his position, while another withdrew altogether. Leaders must be able to read, understand and defend their positions,” she said.
The PS argued that elected leaders have a responsibility to scrutinize government legislation and articulate their positions effectively, saying MPs who cannot explain policy matters fail the people they represent.
Mbaika further criticized opposition politicians for opposing government programmes while continuing to enjoy benefits provided by the same government, including official vehicles, fuel and security.
She accused opposition leaders of misleading wananchi by urging them to reject government initiatives and development programmes while personally benefiting from state resources.
“How do you reject government projects, roads, water and development funds while at the same time enjoying government vehicles, fuel and security? Leaders should not mislead the people,” she said.
The PS maintained that rejecting the national budget would negatively affect development projects and service delivery in local communities, questioning how elected leaders expect wananchi to receive services after voting against government funding measures.
She praised Mutuse for what she termed as a bold and courageous decision to support the Finance Bill despite political pressure.
Speaking at the same event, Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse urged the Kamba community not to be swayed by opposition politics, expressing confidence that President William Ruto would secure victory in the next General Election.
Former Mbooni MP Kisoi Munyao and former Kilome MP Regina Ndambuki also attended the function.
Director of Medical Services for Preventive and Promotive Health Programmes at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Andrew Mulwa, argued that the Ukambani region had lagged behind in development due to its prolonged association with opposition politics.
The leaders called on residents to support government programmes and embrace development-oriented politics aimed at improving infrastructure, healthcare services and economic opportunities in the region
