The Machakos County Government has reaffirmed its commitment to investing in strategic infrastructure development aimed at boosting economic growth and supporting the public transport sector.
Speaking on Friday during the flagging off of ten brand-new minibuses acquired by UMOWA Transport SACCO, Governor Wavinya Ndeti said the county would continue improving road infrastructure to create an enabling environment for businesses and investors.
The governor challenged public transport operators to broaden their horizons by venturing beyond their traditional routes and exploring opportunities in other regions, noting that expansion was key to remaining competitive in the rapidly evolving transport industry.
Drawing inspiration from the historic Akamba Bus Service, which grew from modest beginnings to become one of East Africa’s most recognizable transport brands, Wavinya encouraged local SACCOs to pursue regional growth and capitalize on emerging market opportunities.
“As public transport operators, you need to venture into other routes outside the county in order to exploit the available opportunities for growth in the public transport sector. Just as we have allowed transporters from other regions to operate within Machakos, I challenge you to explore similar opportunities elsewhere. Where you need my support, I will assist,” she said.
The governor praised UMOWA SACCO for its multi-million-shilling investment in the new fleet, describing it as a significant contribution to employment creation and economic empowerment in the county.
She noted that the expansion of the matatu industry not only creates direct jobs for drivers, conductors, and support staff but also stimulates growth in related sectors such as vehicle maintenance, fuel supply, and hospitality businesses operating along transport corridors.
Wavinya further announced that her administration was undertaking extensive investments in road infrastructure, emphasizing that the county remained committed to maintaining and upgrading its road network throughout the year. She said improved roads would protect private investments by reducing vehicle wear and tear while enhancing connectivity and business efficiency.
Machakos County Executive Committee Member for Transport, Nathaniel Nganga, said the county government was focused on creating a fair and transparent operating environment for transport operators through the proper management and organization of bus park facilities.
Meanwhile, UMOWA SACCO Chairman Anthony Mutua commended the county administration for its continued support of the transport sector through infrastructure development, stakeholder engagement, and capacity-building initiatives for industry players.
The acquisition of the new minibuses is expected to strengthen public transport services in Machakos while contributing to the county’s broader agenda of economic growth, job creation, and improved mobility for residents.
