Machakos County has taken a major step toward enhancing efficiency and accountability in its public service following the successful completion of the second cohort of a comprehensive staff training programme held in Mombasa.

Governor Wavinya Ndeti, who joined participants on the final day of the week-long session, said the initiative was informed by identified gaps in key areas such as governance and financial management—both at institutional and personal levels—as well as broader aspects of service delivery.

She noted that equipping staff with these critical skills is expected to boost efficiency, promote accountability, and ultimately improve the quality of services offered to residents.

The Governor emphasized that a well-trained and professional workforce is central to building a stable and responsive civil service capable of meeting the county’s development goals.

Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to staff welfare, urging officers to translate the knowledge acquired into improved service delivery. He called on participants to uphold integrity, diligence, and dedication in serving the public.

County Secretary and Head of Public Service, Dr. Muya Ndambuki, highlighted the programme’s growing impact, revealing that the second cohort has brought the total number of trained staff to 800 under the current initiative. Overall, more than 4,000 county employees have undergone training since 2024. He expressed optimism that by this time next year, all county staff will have been covered.

Beneficiaries of the programme lauded the initiative, citing both professional and personal gains. Revenue officer Martha Kisisyo and ECDE teacher Elizabeth Mualuko said the training had significantly enhanced their work capacity while also improving their personal financial management skills. They noted that such knowledge would contribute to better stewardship of public resources and increased revenue collection.

The development comes amid growing calls for county governments to invest in continuous professional development, staff capacity building, and institutional strengthening as key drivers of effective service delivery and prudent resource management.
