A cloud of grief and tension hangs over Embu County following a violent turn of events that left two people dead near Ishara Level 4 Hospital, in an incident that has sparked fresh concerns over public safety during demonstrations.
In a press statement released by the National Police Service, authorities confirmed that the fatalities occurred on April 14, 2026, after a protest by residents of Evurore Ward spiraled into chaos. The demonstration, initially reported to be peaceful, was aimed at raising grievances against the hospital.
According to the police, the situation deteriorated rapidly when what began as a lawful assembly was allegedly infiltrated by individuals intent on causing disruption. The ensuing unrest saw widespread destruction of property, with several businesses vandalized and multiple bystanders injured.
Police officers responding to the scene were reportedly met with hostility, as groups armed with crude weapons, including stones and other projectiles, confronted law enforcement. The confrontation underscored what authorities described as a deliberate hijacking of the protest by criminal elements with no interest in peaceful expression.
“The loss of life is deeply regrettable. One life lost is one too many,” the statement read, as the Service extended condolences to the bereaved families.
Investigations into the incident are now underway, with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority notified to ensure an independent and transparent inquiry. The police have pledged full cooperation with the oversight body as efforts intensify to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Members of the public have been urged to come forward with any information that may assist investigators, either by reporting to the nearest police station or through designated anonymous reporting channels.
Reaffirming its commitment to law and order, the National Police Service emphasized the importance of peaceful demonstrations and warned against acts of violence that endanger lives and property.
The incident adds to growing scrutiny over the management of public protests, as authorities face mounting pressure to balance citizens’ rights to demonstrate with the need to maintain security and prevent loss of life.
